The conventional large volume processes, as shown in Figure 1, provide mixing and blending of thick stock components and control of entrained air from the forming section white waters. When designed properly, these systems initially perform to an acceptable level. However, as production rates, operating speeds or grade structures change, performance can deteriorate. Results can include poor stock blending and increased levels of entrained air in the headbox white waters, which can negatively impact machine efficiency, productivity and quality. Other problems associated with large volume wet end systems include: • Low operating efficiencies with frequent grade change • Poor attenuation of low frequency variations • Accelerated bacteria and scale growth • Process variability from compression of entrained air Compact wet end systems, as shown in Figure 2, have been developed to address these operating issues and to improve wet end performance over what is available with conventional systems.

Nanofillers for Papermaking Wet End Applications

The papermaking industry can benefit a lot from nanotechnology. This versatile technology can also be used in the area of fillers for papermaking wet end applications. In such applications the main technological examples currently available include wet end addition of commercially available nanofillers, formation of nanofiller/fiber or nanofiller/fibril hybrids, development of novel categories ...

Application of Fillers in Cellulosic Paper by Surface Filling: an Interesting Alternative or Supplement to Wet-end Addition

The application of fillers at the surface of cellulosic paper is an interesting and industrially-commercialized but not very well-known concept, in which the filler particles are essentially added to the voids of the fibrous matrixes. This so-called “surface filling” can be achieved by the use of fillers together with a polymer solution via film press or size press, an approach that is distinct...

Studying the Effect of Cationic Starch- Anionic Nanosilica System on Retention and Drainage

Nanoparticles are widely used in the papermaking industry as retention/ drainage aids, usually in conjunction with a high mass cationic polyelectrolyte such as cationic starch. However, little convincing knowledge of their role and mechanism in the wet-end system is yet found. This work focused on the role of nanosilica on papermaking wet end system in response to some processing parameters (dr...

A Review of Ways to Adjust Papermaking Wet-End Chemistry: Manipulation of Cellulosic Colloidal Behavior

This article reviews various adjustments in chemical additives and process conditions that can be used in the course of papermaking to manipulate either the efficiency of the process or the attributes of the resulting paper. Published studies show that the effects of certain chemical additives to the fiber suspension can be understood based on the forces of interaction between surfaces, i.e. th...

Key Considerations in the Determination of Polyelectrolyte Concentration by the Colloidal Titration Method

Medium or high charge density cationic polyelectrolytes are frequently used for water treatment. In the papermaking wet-end they are used as retention agents or as flocculating aids. Negative polyelectrolytes that enter the papermaking system increase the demand for cationic polyelectrolytes. Polyelectrolyte concentration can be determined by the colloidal titration method, using either of two ...
